🚦 Safe Streets Project Secures Key Interim Approval! (Melville East)
We have some exciting news to share regarding the MSI Safe Streets Project: we’ve reached a major milestone in our application process!
Interim Approval Granted by JRA
Yesterday, 23 December 2025, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) delivered its interim decision on our Safe Streets application, and we are thrilled to announce that it has been provisionally approved for Melville East!
This approval is a significant step forward, especially given the project’s considerable scope, which covers approximately 1,300 properties (including houses, businesses, and institutions). The JRA’s diligent approach is understandable, and the approval is subject to a few minor required amendments.
A Six-Year Journey Reaches a Landmark
- This provisional approval is a landmark achievement, culminating over six years of dedicated effort since our first community meeting in September 2019.
- Your substantial and ongoing community support has been vital in reaching this stage. Thank you!
What Happens Next? (The Public Objection Phase)
The project now enters the legally required public objection period.
- The JRA’s interim decision will be published in the Government Gazette and a local newspaper.
- Please Note: This necessary process is formal and administrative and may take several months to complete.
Get Involved: Communications and Working Groups in the New Year
In the new year, we will provide a comprehensive public update outlining the detailed next steps. This information will be posted here on the Safe Streets website and shared through community groups.
We will also be looking for volunteers to form working groups focused on critical areas:
- Aesthetics: Designing the look and feel of the structures.
- Refinement: Finalizing the Operational Model and Financial Model.
Thank You & Happy Holidays!
We extend our sincere gratitude for your continued belief in this project. We wish you and your loved ones a happy and safe festive season!
