The MSI and the Safe Streets project team are pleased to announce that an Application Reference Number has been received from the city.
This means that the traffic study has been reviewed and accepted, and the city doesn’t believe that Safe Streets will cause unreasonable traffic changes or issues.
We still have a long way to go, the next steps are:
Interaction with the city:
- The application will move to a formal Section 45.2 meeting.
- This meeting will involve questions from the city and may include requests for changes to the overall design and configuration of Safe Streets. Shortly after the meeting, the city will confirm whether the application has been provisionally approved.
- Once approved, the application will move to the advertising and objection phase. Advertisements will be placed at affected road intersections to inform the community.
- Objections, if any, will be handled by the city and the applicants. Only objections indicating a material flaw in the design or a direct infringement on a person’s movement (e.g., a boom blocking a driveway) will be considered.
- The city will issue a letter of approval, after which construction can begin.
Internal MSI and Community actions:
- Design the booms, gates, and closures.
- Community members will create different design options, which will then be put to a community vote.
- Finalize the financial and operating model of Safe Streets.
- Decide on and appoint our security services partner.
How long will this take:
It’s difficult to provide a timeline as it can vary from one application to another. A rough conservative estimate is that approval will be received in the second quarter of 2025, with construction beginning in the third quarter. It could be sooner.
The MSI and the Safe Streets project team thank the Safe Streets Street captains and community members for their continued support and patience with the process.
