Thank you to everyone who joined us on April 11th at 4th Avenue. It was a productive morning of deep dives into the current “Safe Streets” proposal, and the feedback from our community provided invaluable clarity as we navigate the city’s interim approval.
For those who were unable to attend, or for those who want to review the technical details, we are making the full presentation available for download below.
What was covered:
This session served as a critical alignment point. We transitioned from high-level planning into the “brass tacks” of the project, including:
- The Interim Approval: A transparent look at the differences between our original application and the City’s 2-year approval, specifically regarding gate timings and pedestrian access.
- Zone-Specific Impact: Analysis of how the current decision affects security efficacy in sectors like Auckland Park North, Richmond, and the 4th Avenue corridors.
- Financials & Operations: An updated breakdown of projected CapEx and OpEx costs for the new security layer.
- The Roadmap to Amendments: Our strategy for addressing objections and the process for applying for future adjustments once the plan is live.
Coming Soon: Event FAQ
We had a very active Q&A session covering everything from regulatory hurdles to street-level autonomy. We are currently compiling all questions and answers from the workshop into a comprehensive document. This FAQ will be uploaded to the site as soon as it is finished to ensure everyone has access to the same detailed information.
Moving into Action
We have now officially opened the call for volunteers to join our three core work-streams: Security Plan, Financial Model, and Aesthetics. These teams will be responsible for refining the tactical deployment and ensuring the infrastructure matches the unique character of Melville. Should you wish to join any of the work-streams please email us at safestreets@ilovemelville.co.za
